Online holiday bookings are rapidly increasing among UK travellers due to theyre convenience, an industry expert has claimed.
According to UK consumer body Which? Holiday, internet-based travel portals have grown in popularity as they allow consumers to search and compare the best travel deals from the comfort of their own home or office .
Kate Shipp, Which? Holiday researcher, explained: "Its also about being able to compare things quickly on price and choice. You obviously have a choice in a travel agent but you will be restricted perhaps in terms of the holidays on offer ."
She added that by booking online, holidaymakers are also able to "tailor the holiday" to suit their requirements.
However, the growing popularity of online holiday bookings has led to a slump in business for the majority of the UKs high street travel agents .
According to a travel website TravelMole, a special report released last September found that the number of UK travel agent branches in the UK had fallen from 6,100 in 2005 to 5,000 last year.
