The UKs major airports are set to face increased competition from smaller regional airports, with the latter expected to experience continued growth according to claims by an industry expert.
Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at Leeds Bradford International Airport, said that regional airports are becoming more popular among UK travellers due to their convenience and the introduction of more flights to a greater range of destinations.
Mr Hallwood commented: "There is not a shadow of a doubt that regional airports in the UK are going to gain in increasing popularity."
"Over the last three to four years Leeds Bradford Airport has been one of the fastest growing regional airports with growth of over 75 per cent of traffic."
He added that the West Yorkshire airport is now concentrating on introducing more "long-haul destinations", including a direct flight link between Leeds and New York .
According to figures from the Civil Aviation Authority ( CAA ), in 2006 regional airports grew at a rate of 4 per cent, compared to 2.5 per cent for those based in London .
