Youth travel is now a vital part of the global tourism industry, new research has revealed.
According to a report by the UN World Tourism Organisation UNWTO, youth travel is one of the fastest growing sectors of the worldwide travel industry, now representing nearly a fifth of international tourist arrivals .
Further highlighting the importance of young people in the global travel industry, the research revealed that more than half of tourism authorities across the world now see youth travel as an important part of the future of their travel industry.
The research, which was conducted over the past five years, also found that travelling is having a positive effect on young people, with 80 per cent returning from their trips more tolerant and respectful of other cultures.
The average spend of young tourist per trip was found to have increased by 40 per cent in five years, reaching 1,915 (£1,536) in 2007.
The UNWTO report revealed that Australia, the USA and France are the most popular destinations for young travellers, with the majority (70 per cent) setting off abroad in order to study, learn a new language or as a volunteer.
