Australian Currency In High Demand Among UK Holidaymakers

Mon, 03 Nov 2008

British travellers are increasingly stocking up on Australian currency as the pound continues to weaken against the US dollar, according to Post Office travel services .

The group has revealed that the number of UK holidaymakers buying Australian currency recently has rocketed, with travellers looking to get more for their money .

Despite falling sharply against the US dollar, the pound has strengthened by almost 22 per cent against the Australian dollar, rising from 1.94 dollars to the pound in July to its current rate of around 2.36 dollars.

Helen Warburton, head of Post Office travel, said: "Sales of Australian dollars usually peak in November and December as the long-haul travel season gets into its swing. But this year UK tourists seem to have been stocking up much earlier."

"It may be that people who are already planning their trips Down Under have been watching the rate rise and are buying earlier, in case it falls," she suggested.

"Equally it may well be that holidaymakers are switching to a destination where they will get more for their money ."

Australia-holiday specialists Travelbag said the credit crunch has led to a growing trend among tourists "towards a single 'blow out' holiday, generally of three weeks or more, rather than several shorter ones".

Post Office travel services also singled out New Zealand and Turkey as other good-value countries for Brits at the moment.
