Couples are the largest and most significant travelling group for the UK’s tourism industry, new research suggests.
According to data from the United Kingdom Travel Survey, carried out by travel and tourism organisation VisitBritain, British couples made 57.9 million overnight trips in 2007, spending £9.5 billion in the process.
As a result, UK couples boast the largest share of the consumer travel market, followed by single travellers, who made some 38 million overnight trips last year.
Mr Frisby, a spokesman for the tourism organisation, said the UK's diversity is one of its biggest selling, with travellers able to visit bustling cities such as London as well as historical and more scenic locations such as Bath .
"Our cities are benefiting from regeneration programmes, contemporary attractions, new hotels and architecture," he commented.
"We benefit from centuries of history and heritage attractions as well as a unique culture with events, ceremonies and more quirky traditions, rooted in music, film and literature ."
