The coastal town of Eastbourne, East Sussex, has reported a boom in bookings as an increasing number of Brits opt to holiday closer to home .
According to research by operator Shearings Coaches, the town is among the top performing resorts in the UK, with visitor numbers up by 12 per cent from the same period last year.
The findings also revealed that bookings for trips to the town for the first half of 2008 rose by 11.6 per cent on bookings for the same six-month period in 2007.
The town's holiday industry boom was further highlighted by online travel company Lastminute.com, which earlier in the summer reported a 66 per cent increase in their short stay bookings for Eastbourne.
"Thousands of holidaymakers have rediscovered what the UK has to offer this year with many people preferring to remain in this country to get better value and avoid rising exchange rates," commented Fiona Greenhalgh, head of sales and marketing for Shearings .
"Our research shows that Eastbourne is among the biggest winners of this boom appearing in our top ten best performing destinations."
"The results of Shearings' research are good news for the local economy and reassuring for businesses in Eastbourne."
