Eurostar services have been boosted today following the opening of a 17-kilometre section of the north tunnel running below the Channel Tunnel .
Eurotunnel, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel, announced that the development will bring the number of trains running through the tunnel to almost 170 per day representing a 50 per cent increase in service frequency.
The new tunnel will enable a total of 44 Eurostar crossings, 90 truck shuttles, 29 passenger shuttles and a varying number of rail freight trains each day.
Construction of a second 17-kilometre stretch of tunnel is due to be completed over the next few days and would further improve the service available.
Eurostar claims 8.26 million travellers used its services between in 2007 an increase of more than 5 per cent on the previous year.
The company operates from its base at London St Pancras, as well as from Ebbsfleet and Ashford in Kent, carrying passengers to European destinations including Brussels, Paris, Bruges and Lille .
