Portugals golf-break credentials have received a boost from leading travel operator AITO .
The Association of Independent Tour Operators claimed the country is a leading destination for golfing enthusiasts looking to tee-off in between tanning.
"With its temperate climate, Portugal is one of the worlds best year-round destinations for golfing holidays," said a spokesperson for AITO.
The representative added that the Algarve is a "particular favourite" with golfing fans, due to its dense concentration of "high-quality" courses .
In addition, many hotels in the region have members of staff dedicated to handling golfing queries and setting up shuttle services to local courses much to the delight of golfers.
There are 70 high-quality golf courses in Portugal, 18 of which are listed in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World list, compiled by top100golfcourses.co.uk .
The country also won the International Association of Golf Tour Operators Award last year and is likely to be amongst the favourites to land the accolade for 2008.
