Portugal’s golf-break credentials have received a boost from leading travel operator AITO .
The Association of Independent Tour Operators claimed the country is a leading destination for golfing enthusiasts looking to tee-off in between tanning.
"With its temperate climate, Portugal is one of the world’s best year-round destinations for golfing holidays," said a spokesperson for AITO.
The representative added that the Algarve is a "particular favourite" with golfing fans, due to its dense concentration of "high-quality" courses .
In addition, many hotels in the region have members of staff dedicated to handling golfing queries and setting up shuttle services to local courses – much to the delight of golfers.
There are 70 high-quality golf courses in Portugal, 18 of which are listed in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World list, compiled by top100golfcourses.co.uk .
The country also won the International Association of Golf Tour Operators Award last year and is likely to be amongst the favourites to land the accolade for 2008.
