Brits Haggling More Over Holiday Deals

Wed, 05 Aug 2009

British travellers are haggling harder to ensure they get the best holiday deal, according to a new survey by Visa Europe .

The first Visa Europe Holiday Report revealed that a quarter of UK travellers negotiate for a better deal from holiday companies and travel agents and only 11 per cent accept the first price quoted.

Holidaymakers from the South West were found to be the biggest hagglers, closely followed by people in the North East and those living in the East of England .

The survey, which polled over 1,000 holidaymakers online, also discovered that more than half of Britons (56 per cent) spend time researching holidays to get the best price.

However, the report said consumers change their money-saving attitude once they arrive at their destination, with 39 per cent blowing their entire budget and 63 per cent overspending by up to £200 per week.

The survey found that despite the recession over a third of Brits have plans to take at least two holidays this year, while 20 per cent intend to take more breaks than they did last year, with the average trip lasting between 11 and 14 days.

Euan Ballantyne, head of products and delivery at Visa Europe, said the report showed Britons were determined to take a holiday this year, despite the current economic climate.

"Interestingly, it disputes the 'staycation' idea as it shows people are going abroad on holiday," he added.
