Brits Account For A Fifth Of All Visitors To Greece

Mon, 24 Aug 2009

Greece continues to be one of the most popular holiday destinations with British travellers, according to a Greek tourism expert.

Sophia Panayiotaki, director of the UK and Ireland office at the Greek National Tourism Organisation, said that some 3 million people from across the UK book flights to Greece each year.

As a result, Britons make up the largest proportion of visitors to Greece, with one in five tourists to the Mediterranean nation coming from the UK .

Ms Panayiotaki added that residents of other countries like Germany and France were also fond of travelling to Greece .

"During the summer from April to late September, Britons go to the islands like Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Zante, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Crete," she said. "Mainly the islands are popular, although we do see a trend for city breaks ."

The tourist board chief’s comments are in contrast to recent figures from the Touristic Research Institute, which suggested that visitor numbers to Greece fell by 8 per cent in the first half of 2009.
