Brits Still Planning Foreign Breaks For 2009

Wed, 19 Aug 2009

Three in four Brits are either taking or planning to head abroad on a holiday this year despite the weak value of the pound, according to new research.

A survey by insurance comparison website GoCompare.com found most UK residents were in favour of an overseas holiday in order to escape the gloomy economic environment.

It also discovered that those making the trip abroad are becoming more adventurous during their travels, with more than half keen to sample the local cuisine.

Lee Griffin, business development director at Gocompare.com, said: "Our 'Brits Abroad' survey suggests that not even the recession can dampen our love of foreign travel with the majority of people planning to jet-off before the end of the year."

"The weak sterling is making foreign travel more expensive, but there are some simple ways to cut the cost of your holiday - without compromising the quality of your trip ."

Foreign exchange firm HiFX recently claimed that British holidaymakers are unlikely to be put off overseas breaks by poor currency exchange rates.

Marc Cogliatti, currency strategist at the firm, said: "Currency will be a little bit of a factor and the fact that the pound has been so weak does add to the overall costs, but I'm not necessarily sure that it's enough to put the vast majority of Brits off going away."

He added that recent rises in the value of the pound have improved the situation for travellers going abroad now, compared to those who travelled overseas earlier in the year.
