Airline passengers are booking more first class and business class seats, according to new figures which suggest the aviation industry is starting to recover from the economic downturn.
The latest statistics from the International Air Transport Associations (IATA) Premium Traffic Report shows sales of premium seats are beginning to finally stabilise after several months of decline.
The industry body also reported that total passenger numbers in June were just 7.1 per cent lower than in the same month last year, compared to the 9.1 per cent year-on-year fall recorded for May.
The IATA report said: "Passenger travel numbers in June are now indicating some stabilisation in air travel demand. Notably the decline moderated in both premium and economy travel in June."
According to the air travel organisation, most airline companies believe that a full recovery in the aviation sector will not materialise until 2011.
Meanwhile, low-cost carrier Flybe has announced plans to launch a number of new flights from the UK to popular sea and sun destinations in Europe next year.
The airline also revealed that it intends to expand domestic services by increasing its routes from London Gatwick Airport - from where it carries more domestic passengers than any other airline .
