UK holidaymakers booking trips to exotic long-haul destinations have been advised to ensure they have the necessary vaccinations before heading abroad.
Dr Peter Swinyard, chairman of the Family Doctor Association, said that many people often plan holidays to far-flung locations that are affected by malaria but do not consider that they may need to be vaccinated beforehand.
"People often come back feverish and when asked if they took malaria tablets, they say 'why would I do that?'" Dr Swinyard said.
"[They] are getting so used to travelling abroad for their holidays that it is not a special thing to do anymore."
"People book online or through a travel agent, but the thought of their health doesn't even cross their minds."
His remarks come after a recent study by Post Office Travel Insurance revealed that almost half of British holidaymakers do not know which vaccinations or medication they need for certain long-haul destinations .
The research also found that a many Brits are unaware that they can pick up many of the most common medications and vaccinations on the NHS .
