Icelandic Tourism Boosted By Weak Krona

Mon, 14 Dec 2009

An increasing number of British travellers are planning to visit Iceland due to the weak value of the krona, it has been revealed.

According to the Icelandic Tourist Board (ITB), more Brits are viewing the country as a tourist destination because of the attractive exchange rate, with the British pound currently worth 202.41 Icelandic krona .

Sigga Groa Thorarinsdottir, the ITB's UK and Ireland marketing manager, explained: "The weakening of the krona has certainly drawn worldwide attention to Iceland during 2009 and the trend for visitors to avoid the eurozone will definitely be a consideration for people's travelling habits for 2010."

She revealed that visiting holidaymakers are spending nearly double the amount of money during their trips than in previous years.

This increase in holiday spend comes despite the fact that many attractions in the capital city of Reykjavik are free, according to Ms Thorarinsdottir.

Islandsbanki recently revealed that the average tourist in Iceland spends roughly ISK170,000 (£840) during the course of their visit.
