Skiers Warned Against Drinking At High Altitudes

Fri, 11 Dec 2009

Britons planning on taking a ski break this winter are being warned about the dangers of drinking on holiday .

Binge drinking has become a dangerous problem in many popular skiing destinations, particularly the French Alps, which welcomes around one million British skiers each winter.

With the 09/10 ski season set to kick off, authorities in the UK and France are now aiming to tackle to problem by educating young Brits on the dangers of drinking at high altitudes.

Sir Peter Westmacott, the UK ambassador to France, said that a campaign to discourage binge drinking would be launched by the British government in conjunction with Yves Guyon, the president of the Lyon Airport authority.

The campaign will involve flyers being handed out in popular ski resorts highlighting the dangers of binge drinking as well as advice on holiday insurance for British skiers.

Sir Westmacott said that an increase in the number of young people taking drinking breaks in the French Alps has heightened the need to raise awareness on the dangers of drinking alcohol at high altitudes.
