Wintry Weather Hits Eurostar Services

Mon, 21 Dec 2009

Eurostar services have been suspended for a third day running due to the hazardous weather conditions.

The high-speed rail operator has launched a review after snowfall caused a number of train breakdowns over the weekend, leaving more than 55,000 passengers stranded.

On Saturday more than 2,000 people were trapped inside the Channel Tunnel for hours after five trains suffered electrical failure due to freezing conditions.

The company said it will not sell any tickets for its cross-Channel services until after 26 December.

A statement on the Eurostar website said: "We are committed to restoring our services as soon as possible but our key priority is the safety and comfort of our customers."

"We strongly advise passengers whose travel is non-essential to change their booking to a later date or claim a refund on their tickets."

The company is offering customers who suffered major delays a refund on their tickets, a free return ticket and £150 compensation per passenger.

Heavy snowfall caused delays and cancellations at a number of UK airports over the weekend with Gatwick Airport the worst affected.

There were 26 cancellations throughout Saturday at Heathrow Airport, while hundreds of people were stranded at Bristol International Airport after Easyjet scrapped five flights .

Flights were also disrupted at Manchester Airport last night due to heavy snowfall.
