UK tourism agency VisitBritain has predicted that 2009 could be a defining year for tourism in Britain due to the weakened value of the pound.
The organisation said up to 5m more Britons could take holidays within the UK this year due to increased costs overseas, while the strength of the euro and dollar against sterling will continue to attract more foreign tourists to Britain
Christopher Rodrigues, chairman of VisitBritain and the former chief executive of Thomas Cook, commented: "Despite current economic woes, tourism is one of the few industries that could show growth, with a real opportunity to grow to a £133bn industry by 2018."
"Our priority this year has to be working with the industry to encourage Britons to explore their own country and foreigners to visit us right now, when we offer great value."
VisitBritain said a £6.5m PR campaign was being launched to promote Britain as a value for money holiday destination.
The new three-year strategy to boost both domestic and foreign tourism will begin by emphasising special deals from the UK industry and free access to national museums and galleries .
