New York Remains Great Value For British Tourists

Mon, 19 Jan 2009

The iconic city of New York remains a "great value" holiday destination for British tourists despite the weak value of the pound against the US dollar, according to an industry expert.

Jonathan Sloane, communications director for tourist board NYC &Company, said that sterling has now returned to its more traditional level against the dollar following a "honeymoon period" of exceptionally favourable exchange rates for UK travellers in recent years.

But Mr Sloane suggested that Brits can still take advantage of excellent value for their money in New York, with shopping prices in particular remaining at favourable levels.

"Visitors to the US have enjoyed a honeymoon period in the exchange rate, making shopping, accommodation, eating out and more all seem at bargain prices," he commented.

"The rate is now back to the level that most people remember, but a trip to NYC still remains great value, particularly in terms of shopping prices."

He added: "In relative terms against other popular tourism destinations, there hasn’t been a huge impact as the British pound has dropped against most currencies in particular the euro ."

Travel to New York has been boosted by a price war between Britain’s major airlines British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, which has resulted in fares falling to as low as £258 for a return flight .

Mr Sloane said the current charges are some of the lowest that he could remember for flights to New York from the UK.
