New figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have revealed that regional carrier Flybe is now Britains number one domestic carrier.
According to the statistics, the airline operator carried over a quarter (26 per cent) of all domestic travellers in April, ahead of rival carrier easyJet with a 23 per cent share.
Flybe was also top in terms of total passenger numbers, with some 451,413 passengers using its services.
As a result, the regional airline strengthened its position at London Gatwick, carrying more domestic passengers from the airport than any other operator during the months of April and May.
Mike Rutter, Flybes chief commercial officer, commented: "Just six years ago, Flybe was a distant fifth in the UK domestic market. "
"It's a mark of how far we've come that, in less than a decade, we're now number one a phenomenal achievement."
"We now serve 35 airports in the UK, affirming our commitment to keeping Britain on the move through these challenging economic times."
In addition to its range of domestic services, Flybe offers flights to Paris, Alicante, Milan and other European destinations from various UK airports.
Last week, KLM was named the countrys most punctual airline figures showed it achieved the best on-time performance of all scheduled airlines operating at UK airports in the first quarter of 2009.
