South Africa Attracting More UK Tourists

Wed, 01 Jul 2009

South Africa is becoming an increasingly popular destination for British holidaymakers, according to the World Travel Market.

The growing interest in South African holidays among Britons has been attributed to the strong exchange rate and the build-up to next summer’s FIFA World Cup .

Despite the value of sterling tumbling against other currencies such as the euro, its value against the South African rand is at its strongest for years.

According to M&S Money, the rand is its fourth most popular currency so far this year, while Post Office Travel Services recently ranked South Africa the third cheapest country for UK travellers.

Fiona Jeffery, chairman of the World Travel Market, said: "South Africa is a brilliant holiday destination which is growing in popularity amongst British travellers due to the favourable exchange rate ."

"The 2010 World Cup has seen the profile of South Africa rise in the UK. This increased profile alongside the favourable exchange rate has seen the interest in and booking to South Africa increase significantly in 2009."

The FIFA World Cup, the biggest event in international football, will be held between 11 June and 11 July next year, with matches taking place in various cities across the country including Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban .
