BA Achieves 90 Per Cent Punctuality Record For May

Fri, 19 Jun 2009

British Airways has revealed that nearly 90 per cent of its flights departed on time in May, setting a new punctuality record for the month.

The impressive figure exceeds the airline’s on-time efforts in April, including the busy Easter period, when 85 per cent of its services kept to their schedule.

The UK flag carrier’s best performance last month was at London Gatwick, where 94 per cent of its flights took off on time – the best punctuality rate on record for any major carrier in May and up from the 92 per cent achieved in April.

BA’s operations at Heathrow Terminal 5 have also improved, with more than 4m passengers travelling on around 30,000 flights during April and May.

Andy Lord, BA’s director of operations, said: "We have never had such consistently high feedback scores from our customers and our operation continues to break records on an almost weekly basis."

"On many days we now have more than 90 per cent of our 720 daily flights around the world departing on time."

The announcement comes just a few days after the Civil Aviation Authority revealed that Britain’s ten busiest airports improved their overall punctuality performance of scheduled flights from the 70 per cent recorded in the first quarter of 2008 to 81 per cent this year.

The CAA monitored the ten air travel hubs between January and March and found the biggest improvements were noted at London Heathrow and London City, which achieved year-on-year increases of 20 per cent and 18 per cent respectively in their on-time rates.
