Beaches in Cornwall are set to attract thousands of UK holidaymakers this summer with new research revealing the Cornish coast is the top 2009 domestic holiday destination for Brits.
The popular region, which boasts several of Britains best beach resorts, including St Ives, Padstow, Penzance, topped a recent domestic holiday survey by budget hotel group Travelodge, ahead of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales .
Completing the top 10 list were the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Edinburgh, London, the Isle of Wight, Devon, Norfolk Broads and in tenth place South Wales .
The Travelodge research also found that the number of Brits choosing to head overseas for their summer break has fallen from 33 per cent to 27 per cent, while planned holiday spending has also dropped from £631 to £567 per holiday .
Of those opting to holiday in the UK, 40 per cent have booked seaside holidays, 24 per cent are heading to the countryside and 18 per cent are taking a theme park-related break .
A Travelodge spokesperson said. "The summer of 2009 is set to be a big year for the British tourism industry."
"With the met office predicting glorious weather and a majority of holidaymakers looking to stay at home, this year the resorts and destinations of the UK will be jam packed with British tourists."
