Cornwall has been named as the number one destination for British holidaymakers this summer, as new research reveals a third of Brits plan to spend their time off in the UK.
A 2009 summer holiday report, commissioned by budget accommodation group Travelodge, found that the number of Brits intending to holiday abroad this year has fallen to 27 per cent, from 33 per cent in 2008.
Of those who plan to book a domestic holiday, 40 per cent intend to visit the seaside the same as last year with Cornwall holidaymakers most desirable UK location, ahead of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
Just under a quarter (24 per cent) plan to stay in the countryside this summer, up 4 per cent from last year, whiles 18 per cent intend on taking a theme park inspired break (up 8 per cent).
However, the report revealed that holidaying Brits expect to spend £64 less this year than in 2008, with the average spend over a seven day period estimated to be £567.
Paul Harvey, managing director at Travelodge, said: "The summer of 2009 is set to be a big year for the British tourism industry. With the Met Office predicting glorious weather and a majority of holidaymakers looking to stay at home, this year the resorts and destinations of the UK will be jam packed with British tourists."
"It is also clear that people are looking to have an affordable break, cutting back on how much they are looking to spend when compared to the summer of 2008."
He added: "Any tourism operators or resorts that are looking to raise prices to cash in on people holidaying domestically are likely to find that visitors choose to stay away.
