Eastern Europe Top For Bargain Winter Sports Breaks

Wed, 14 Oct 2009

British travellers looking for a bargain winter sports break over the coming months should head to Eastern Europe, according to a new report.

A study by the Post Office found that ski resorts in Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia offer the lowest prices, with the Poiana Brasov resort in Romania the cheapest of all.

Skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts who stay at the hotel pay an average of £195.76 for essential items including equipment hire, lift passes, meals and drinks.

However, the Post Office report also revealed that mainstream European resorts can still offer "good value for skiers".

The study found La Thuile in Italy to be the continent’s most affordable major skiing destination, while prices at the popular ski resort of Courchevel in France are reportedly 25 per cent lower than this time last year.

Sarah Munro, head of travel services at the Post Office, said: " French ski resorts have responded well to the pressures imposed by the strong euro by slashing prices and Courchevel now rates as one of the cheapest eurozone ski destinations as a direct result."

"While bargain hunters will still find the lowest prices in Romania and Bulgaria, price should not be the only issue when planning a ski holiday . It's important to choose a resort that matches your ability and expectations."
