Egypt Holiday Bookings Proving Popular For Half Term Travellers

Wed, 21 Oct 2009

Many British families looking to make the most of their children’s half-term school break are planning on heading to Egypt, according to The Co-operative Travel .

The travel operator said it has experienced a huge rise in holiday bookings to Egypt for the Autumn half term, which runs from Mon 26 October 2009 to Fri 30 October 2009.

Bookings to Sharm el-Sheikh, one of Egypt's most established and lively holiday resorts, have soared by 142 per cent year-on-year for the half term week in October, largely due to a "significant" fall in the cost of holidays to the popular resort .

According to The Co-op Travel, the average selling price for a family holiday to Sharm el-Sheikh has fallen by 20.7 per cent, from £2,394 to £1,898.

In contrast, the average price of holidays to the number one family holiday destination, Tenerife, has risen by 14.7 per cent.

The travel group added that other popular Spanish destinations have been affected by the weak value of the pound against the euro .

Trevor Davis, director of retail distribution at The Co-operative Travel, explained: "Holiday destinations like Tenerife will always be popular in October as they offer good weather with relatively short flight times."

"However, there has been a shortage of late deals this year, and with the euro still high, families are looking further afield for value."

"Resorts such as Sharm el-Sheikh also benefit from having a large selection of all-inclusive hotels, so families can budget for their holiday before they travel ."
