Italy has been named the best European country for a long holiday in the 2009 Sunday Times Travel Magazine Reader Awards.
The country piped Greece and Spain to the accolade, with Sunday Times readers praising its food, fashion, culture and scenery.
Greece’s sunny weather, beaches and historical sights were highlighted by readers, while Spain received enough votes to take third place due to the quality of its food and wine, and laid-back lifestyle.
Other awards went to the US, which was voted the world’s number one country for a long holiday, closely followed by Thailand and Australia .
Readers also named Paris their favourite city break destination outside the UK, with New York in second place and Rome third.
In the airlines category, EasyJet scooped the award for best budget carrier, while Virgin Atlantic beat Singapore Airlines and British Airways to land the award for best long-haul operator.
