Heathrow Airport experienced its busiest ever August this summer, according to new figures from airport operator BAA .
The data revealed some 6.4 million passengers passed through the UKs largest and busiest air travel hub during the month, a slight increase of 0.3 per cent on the previous year and the largest number for August on record.
BAA attributed the growth to a strong leisure market and Heathrow's "powerful network of international routes".
The operators chief executive, Colin Matthews, said: "Heathrow's traffic performance in July and August was good. The airport benefits from being the hub of a strong international route network, which is important both socially and economically."
"However, industry conditions remain difficult. A continuation of the improving trend at Heathrow depends on business travellers re-establishing face-to-face contact with global markets."
Overall, the seven UK airports owned by BAA handled a total of 14.4 million passengers in August, down 3.1 per cent on the previous year.
London Gatwick experienced a 1.2 rise in domestic traffic, while the number of passengers on European scheduled flights increased by 5.6 per cent.
At Edinburgh airport, passenger numbers for August were up by for the fifth month running, rising by 4.8 per cent.
