Bangkok is one of the most affordable city break destinations in the world, according to new research.
The Thai capital topped a list of 20 of the world's leading holiday cities for affordability, complied by personal finance provider Virgin Money Travel Insurance .
The company’s research was based on the cost of accommodation, car hire and other holiday products, although the cost of flights was not taken into account.
Dublin was named the second cheapest destination for a two-night break, followed by Prague, Stockholm and Sydney .
New York was found to be the most expensive city break destination, coming last in the top 20 list which also included Milan, Moscow, Cape Town, Toronto, Berlin and London .
"A two-night stay in Milan is over three times more expensive than in Bangkok," commented Grant Bather of Virgin Money Travel Insurance .
" City breaks are big business now and our research shows you don't have to break the bank when you're on holiday ."
He added: "While going further afield might feel more expensive, tourists can recoup a lot of extra expense because of the value for money in cities once you arrive."
