More Brits Booking Trips To Sri Lanka

Wed, 30 Sep 2009

Sri Lanka is becoming an increasingly popular destination among British travellers, according to the country's tourist board.

New figures from the board show that the number of visitors from the UK to Sri Lanka in August was up 16.9 per cent from the same month the previous year, largely due to the relaxation of travel advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Indian Ocean Island recorded an overall increase of 32 per cent in the number of arrivals from all travel markets last month, with many travellers visiting attractions such as Yala National Park and Arugam Bay .

The tourist board data also suggests that the country is set to end the year strongly due to the number of advanced bookings.

Sanjika Perera, Sri Lanka's UK tourism director, said: "We have worked on a persistent promotional campaign in conjunction with the hotel industry back home and with our airline and tour operator partners in the UK and the results have been very positive."

"To have improved visitor figures during the recession shows that the British public are aware of the diversity that Sri Lanka offers and keen to experience an Indian Ocean break, at an attractive price."

Travellers can book flights to Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka, with a number of airlines including Sri Lankan Airlines, Etihad and bmi .
