Brits Make Record Trips To Iceland In January

Mon, 15 Feb 2010

A record number of British travellers made a trip to Iceland in January, new figures have revealed.

Latest data from the Icelandic Tourist Board (ITB) showed that 4,312 people from the UK travelled to the country last month, an 11.6 per cent increase from the 3,865 visitors recorded in January 2009.

In total, more than 61,600 British tourists were welcomed to Iceland last year, making the UK the largest inbound travel market for the country.

Sigga Groa Porarinsdottir, the ITB's UK and Ireland marketing manager, explained that many UK travellers have been showing a growing interest in Iceland due to the fact that it has become 'much more affordable' as a result of the recent drop in value of the Icelandic krona against the British pound.

She said: "Despite the economic downturn, Iceland continues to be a popular destination for British holidaymakers year-round."

"Although the pound is weak, the Icelandic krona is a lot weaker. After the credit crunch shopping has increased quite considerably, much more than the incoming tourists so they are coming and spending much more in Icelandic krona ."

The Icelandic tourism official added: "2009 was a challenging year for Iceland but these figures are very encouraging and there is further cause for optimism as visitors will soon have a greater range of travel options, not only from the UK but also within Iceland ."

Flights to Iceland from the UK are available from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, and via Manchester and Glasgow airports.
