2009 A Record Year For Dubai International

Mon, 18 Jan 2010

Dubai International experienced its busiest year to date in 2009, handling a record 40.9 million passengers, new figures have revealed.

Recent data from Airports Council International show that the airport saw passenger traffic increase by 9.2 per cent from the previous year, making it one of only four hubs to report positive growth in 2009, along with Istanbul (6.3 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (4.6 per cent) and Cairo (1.5 per cent).

In December, some 3.8 million people passed through Dubai International, 14 per cent more than the 3.3 million passengers recorded during December 2008 and the seventh consecutive double-digit increase in traffic.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai Airports and chief executive of Emirates Airline, said the data confirmed Dubai International as a world leader in passenger traffic growth.

"Dubai Airports is setting the pace globally," he commented. "Dubai International's performance as one of the world's fastest growing airports in 2009 is particularly impressive considering the traffic contraction seen globally."

"This rapid growth strengthens our commitment to continue building Dubai into a world-class global aviation and logistics hub."

2010 is expected to prove even more successful for the Dubai hub, with growth of 13.6 per cent forecast for this year.
