Aruba Rising In Popularity With British Holidaymakers

Wed, 13 Jan 2010

The tropical island of Aruba has become one of the top ten Caribbean destinations for UK travellers, the country’s tourist board has revealed.

According to official figures from the Aruba Tourism Authority, some 10,265 British tourists visited the island between January and September 2009, an increase of 42 per cent on the same period in 2008.

This figure marks the first time that more than 10,000 visitors from the UK have arrived in one year.

The Aruba Tourist Board Authority said it is expecting 2010 to be "even better" thanks to new advertising campaigns and increased access to the island.

Joanna Walding, UK director of the Aruba Tourism Authority, said: "Despite the economic downturn, Aruba had a record year and remains one of the fastest growing destinations in the Caribbean for the UK market."

"With more flights available and two major advertising campaigns going on, we are confident that the upward trend can be maintained for 2010."

Dutch airline KLM set to resume flights to the island from Amsterdam from February, while a £150,000 promotional initiative is being launched this year on the London Underground.
