The Canary Islands and mainland Spain were the most searched for holiday destinations online by Brits over the festive period, according to Travelsupermarket.com.
The online travel portal reported a massive 65 per cent increase in travel searches in the three days before Christmas, when many people across the UK were snowed in, and a 15 per cent rise in the three days after December 25th.
Topping the list of the most popular holiday destinations were the Canaries and Spain, with Egypt, the US, the Caribbean, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, Cyprus and Mexico making up the top 10.
Despite the findings, Travelsupermarket.com said it expected domestic and non-eurozone holidays to remain popular as hard-pressed Britons continue to seek value for money.
Last week, travel site Expedia.co.uk revealed that trips to the Balkans and sports tourism are set to prove popular in 2010.
It claimed that countries such as Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia will join Turkey and Egypt as the latest summer hotspots due to the ongoing strength of the Euro against the pound.
In addition, thousands of people will travel across the globe to attend this year's major sporting events which include the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the Commonwealth Games in India and the FIFA World Cup in South Africa .
