Birmingham airport is set to undergo a £13 million terminal overhaul in an effort to improve the travel experience for passengers this year.

Airport officials have revealed that the money will be spent on merging its two terminals will be merged into a single area, which will be designed to improve efficiency and speed up the flow of passengers.

The new terminal will also include a larger search zone to make security checks quicker, and passengers in both landside and airside areas will be provided with a wider range of shopping and dining facilities.

Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham airport, explained the multi-million pound development will help the air travel hub achieve its goal of improving passenger experience in 2010.

He added that it also part of a wider plan to invest £200 million in airport facilities over the next ten years in a bid to double the number of passengers using its services.

Mr Kehoe said: "Birmingham airport is a complex organisation which has experienced growth in recent years and has to respond to growing expectations from customers, service partners and the wider industry."

Travellers catching flights from Birmingham this year will also benefit from a new tourist information centre, while a new £1.3m Emirates lounge will open for the airline’s premium passengers.
